But what's the point!?
6 Reasons you should hire a professional family photographer
You know what the cliche is surrounding photography and capturing life's precious memories. Photographers love throwing that around. While there is some truth to it, let's face it -- times have changed! Most of us carry around a smart phone literally everywhere we go which can take incredible photos. We have thousands of photos in our Google drive of everything from our family vacations, to what we made for dinner last night. It's actually awesome how easily we capture memories now. So I'm not out to battle the cell phone camera -- 'cause I'd lose! And plus, I love the photos my phone takes. I am even a fan of the selfie stick! But as much as I believe our phone cameras are great, I still believe professional photography will always have a place.
Here's why:
Selfie stick magic
1. It gets everyone in front of the camera, including the unofficially appointed family photographer. In my family, that's me. Whenever I'm asked for a photo of myself, I really have to dig. I'm always behind the camera taking the photos. Hence, my selfie stick obsession. But if you hire someone, you'll have some photos of yourself, proof you exist, and plus, you'll look great!
2. It brings you together. This is related to the first point. You might hang out with certain people a lot, but how often do you stop to take a photo? Probably not that often. Just make it happen. I promise you'll cherish the photos you were conflicted about booking.
3. It's wall worthy. Seeing family photos on your wall, especially large, is so satisfying, and brightens up your home. As cheesy as it sounds, they will bring a smile to your face every time you walk by. A $30 canvas from Winners just doesn't compare to that kind of beauty, captured with a quality lens, with everyone looking their best in a beautiful location.
4. Kids like it. I can't speak for pets, but children feel comforted and even have higher self esteem when they see family photos including themselves displayed in the home. "When a child sees a family portrait with them included in the photograph they say to themselves: ‘These people have me as part of what they are, that’s why I belong here. This is where I come from.”*
5. Get what you want. A professional photographer can help you get the photos you want. Let's face it, they have experience under their belt, and some nice gear, too. They can comment on wardrobe choices and posing, and identify great locations and achieve proper lighting. If you have a vision, don't be afraid to discuss it with your photographer. And even after your shoot, if something isn't quite right to you, whether is a strand of hair across your child's face, or a signpost in the background, your photographer has the editing skills to make your photos just right.
6. No regrets. Have you ever heard of someone who regretted getting family photos? NOPE. It's always a good idea. Do it now, and do it regularly!
